Rio de Janeiro will host the first ever Brazilian SailGP event, with the Enel Rio Sail Grand Prix taking place on Guanabara Bay, in front of the iconic Rio skyline and stunning Sugarloaf Mountain.
The event on May 3-4, 2025 will be the 6th stop on SailGP’s 2024/25 Season calendar and mark the first home event for the Mubadala Brazil SailGP Team in its first season.
It comes as double Olympic champion Martine Grael was announced driver of the nation’s SailGP Team - the league’s first female driver.
Unveiling Rio as the host of Brazil’s first SailGP event, league CEO Russell Coutts pointed to the country’s ‘highly engaged fan base which loves racing’.
“We know the people of Rio will add their special Brazilian flair to the event, getting behind Martine, the Mubadala Brazil SailGP Team and enjoying the adrenaline-fuelled atmosphere our events are becoming known for.”
He added that SailGP will ‘redefine the image of sailing in Brazil’ and ‘attract and entirely new audience of followers’.
Brazilian sports and entertainment firm IMM will join forces with Brazilian sailing confederation, CBVela, to organize the Enel Rio Sail Grand Prix.
Owned by former Brazilian Olympic sailor, Alan Adler, IMM’s portfolio includes some of Brazil’s most iconic events, including the Rio Open, Cirque Du Soleil and São Paulo Fashion Week. The same firm will operate the Mubadala Brazil SailGP Team.
The iconic city of Rio will provide ‘the perfect stage of this open-air spectacle’, said Adler, highlighting the surroundings of Guanabara Bay, Sugarloaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer.’
“It has always been our dream to have the Brazilian team participating in a stage close to the fans, who are passionate about high-level sports. SailGP, a new professional league, synonymous with innovation, technology, speed and a serious commitment to environmental preservation, will certainly captivate the public,” he added.
