INFORMATION FOR PUBLIC BOATERS

PUBLIC EXCLUSION ZONE – FRIDAY, SATURDAY, SUNDAY

SEGURIDAD EN EL PUERTO

  • Free Practice Day - Thursday 22 February: no public exclusion zone - limited F50s on the water
  • Official Practice Day - Friday 23 February: public exclusion zone in operation 1:00PM-3:00PM
  • Race Day 1 - Saturday 24 February: public exclusion zone in operation 3:00PM-6:00PM
  • Race Day 2 - Sunday 25 February: public exclusion zone in operation 3-6pm

Over the weekend, you will witness 10 international SailGP teams and their F50 foiling catamarans on Sydney Harbour training and racing. One of the fastest sailing boats in the world, these impressive vessels measure 50 feet/15 metres in length and can travel at speeds of up to 100km per hour.

On Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 February, the SailGP racing takes place from approximately 4:00pm-5.30pm, with the public exclusion in operation from 3:00pm- 6:00pm

The F50s will mostly be contained to the Exclusion Zone, except when transiting to and from the Tech Base, or on Thursday’s practice day. To ensure the safety of all boaters and sailors if you encounter the F50s on the water, please be aware of the following:

  • Avoid getting too close by boat whilst the F50s are sailing
  • F50s move quickly so always check behind you before making a sudden change in direction
  • Keep an eye out for other marine traffic while the F50s are training without an exclusion. There are no boundaries or race marshalls to guide boaters
  • Up to 10 F50s may be on the harbour at any one time.

The above map is updated daily once the course is adjusted for weather conditions. It indicates the public exclusion zone for the day. Only official SailGP spectator and flagged BYOB vessels are permitted inside this area.

Public boaters without a flag may stop on the north and west perimeter of the exclusion zone only, as the remainder of the exclusion zone needs to be kept clear for transit for ferries, commercial and recreational boaters

Durante las horas de la zona de exclusión del público (véase más arriba), tenga en cuenta lo siguiente en los canales de tránsito alrededor de la zona.

  • 6-knot speed limit
  • No stopping permitted
  • No anchoring permitted

Bring Your Own Boat (BYOB) Flags

Watch the high-speed action on the water from your own boat. New in 2024, boaters can now purchase a flag to secure a preferential viewing position inside the public exclusion zone, giving you the best vantage point to watch the action!

Boats without a flag will be held outside of the exclusion zone during racing. Vessels must be under 80 feet to be eligible for BYOB. BYOB Flags cannot be used for commercial purposes. Flags can be purchased here by using the arrows to scroll right and clicking on BYOB.

What’s happening on the harbour before the SailGP racing?

Conservation

SailGP is fighting for a better future, using energy from nature. The KPMG Australia Sail Grand Prix I Sydney is bringing together a large fleet of spectators during the event. Sydney Harbour is our racing area and we are sensitive to its protection and to the preservation of marine life specific to its waters. Help us preserve the flora and fauna: beneath the bustling water traffic lives an incredible wealth of marine life, including more than 580 fish species, migrating whales, dolphins, penguins and kelp forests with seahorses and sea dragons. Think about your own impact on the local environment and help us protect the magnificent waters of Sydney Harbour.
